Biosynthesis of Taurine

As shown in Figure 14.7, taurine is a ^-amino sulfonic acid (2-aminoethane sulfonic acid) and can be synthesized from cysteine by three pathways:

1. Oxidation to cysteine sulfinic acid, followed by decarboxylation to hypo-taurine and oxidation to taurine. In most tissues, it is the decarboxylation
