Elbow injuries may occur in all kinds of training and sports as a result of overuse or trauma. Dry needling acupuncture can be used in all cases of elbow injury for accelerating soft tissue healing, especially as an adjunct to other treatment modalities ranging from physical therapy to surgery.
Little league elbow, seen in throwers aged 8 to 14 years, especially pitchers and catchers, is an overuse injury to the fusing medial epicondyle apophysis from repetitive throwing. During the acceleration phase of pitching or the pull through during swimming a large valgus stress is placed on the medial elbow. Athletes typically present with medial elbow pain during throwing and sometimes at rest. Weakness and pain are present with resisted wrist flexion and pronation. The athlete has pain with valgus stress to the elbow and may lack full elbow extension. Occasionally, ulnar nerve irritation causes parasthesias in the ulnar distribution. A forceful throwing motion can damage these joints and their associated ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Throwing activity results simultaneously in compression of structures on the lateral elbow and stretching of structures on the medial elbow.
