Treatment

The mucocutaneous hyperpigmented macules seen in PJS are benign, and treatment is for cosmetic purposes only. Large or symptomatic gastrointestinal polyps should be removed and screening stool studies, radiologic studies, upper endoscopy, and colonoscopy are recommended for any adolescent or adult suspected of having PJS. Patients also need to be monitored regularly for extraintestinal malignancies with abdominal ultrasounds, annual breast exams, pelvic exams, and testicular exams, beginning at adolescence.
