Symptoms and signs referable to the head and neck often reveal a wealth of clues about underlying systemic disease. For example, eye inflammation, while a singular clinical event in many cases, may also herald an immunologic, infectious, or neoplastic process. Some diseases, such as CS, are the frequent domain of the head and neck specialist, while others, such as sarcoidosis, usually (but not always) come to the attention of the head and neck specialist through consultation. Regardless, the management of systemic disease with head and neck manifestations generally requires a multidisciplinary team of several subspecialists to diagnose the full extent of the disease, decide about therapy, and monitor its response.
