R V Egeners Granulomatosis Introduction

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a systemic disease first described by Heinz Klinger in 1931 and later reported in greater detail by Friedrich Wegener in 1936 and 1939. The striking distinctive features noted by both physicians were an unusual pattern of both upper and lower airway involvement and glomerulonephritis (GN) that had not previously been seen in other reported forms of vasculitis. We now recognize that WG may present without all of these features being present, and, indeed, some patients may never develop disease beyond ear, nose, and throat (ENT) organs.
