Leukemias

Leukemias are classified as acute and chronic. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common malignancy affecting children. The incidence is approximately 3/100,000. In adults, acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML) accounts for the majority of cases. Approximately 12,000 new cases occur in the United States each year. There is a slight male predominance. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) affects approximately 7000 people per year. Most are older than 50 years. CML is discussed in this chapter with the MPDs.
