The prevalence of uveitis in the Western world has been estimated to be 38 to 714 per 100,000 persons, with an incidence of 17 to 52 per 100,000 persons per year. It is estimated that 2.3 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with uveitis. About 70% to 90% of patients with uveitis present between the ages of 20 and 60, including 50% in the third and fourth decades of life. The gender distribution may vary depending on the specific disease entity. Anterior uveitis is the most common form of uveitis and accounts for 50% to 60% of all cases. Intermediate uveitis represents 2% to 12% of the cases and is the least common. Posterior uveitis accounts for 15% to 50% of cases. Uveitis may signal an underlying systemic disease in 25% to 50% (2-4).
