Definition

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem disease of unknown etiology characterized by noncaseating granulomatous inflammation of the affected tissue (Fig. 2B). The presence of bilateral hilar adenopathy, interstitial pulmonary infiltrates or fibrosis, inflammatory eye disease, and skin lesions suggests a diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Other commonly involved organs include the liver, lymph nodes, spleen, nervous system, bones, heart, muscles, salivary glands, and spleen. A diagnosis requires clinical and/or radiologic findings compatible with sarcoidosis in at least two sites combined with histological evidence of noncaseating granulomatous inflammation (30).
