Complications And Prognosis

Invasive fungal sinusitis is devastating. Many patients will not survive, and those who do often are left with permanent disfigurement. The overall mortality ranges from 25% to 75%. The most important predictor of survival is successful correction of the predisposing condition. This includes control of ketoacidosis in diabetics and reversal of the underlying immunocompromised state. Risk factors associated with death include delayed diagnosis, presence of hemiparesis, bilateral sinus involvement, leukemia, renal disease, and treatment with deferoxamine.
