Presentday Cultivation And Usage

Knowledge about the bambara groundnut in the Cote d'lvoire is limited, and few people know the role of the crop in society. BG is mainly cultivated in the savannah area, but it is also well known in western and central regions of the country. Small-scale farmers and a limited number of people in rural areas grow BG mainly as a subsistence crop. Farmers sow seeds of various landraces in different agro-ecological environments. There is little information available on yield levels. BG yields are highest when seeds are sown in July or August, especially after sufficient rainfall. Generally, seeds are boiled with or without salt and pepper (Figure 22.2). Seeds can also be ground, and the subsequent flour used to make cakes. BG cultivars that are resistant to foliar diseases have a dual role in providing pods for human use, and fodder for livestock feed.
