The longan (Dimocarpus Longan Lour.) is an evergreen tree of the Sapindaceae family that originated in China. In China, longan is cultivated in the Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hainan, Taiwan, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces. It is also grown commercially in many other countries throughout the tropics, including Thailand, India, and Vietnam. In recent years, a number of studies have been conducted to explore the pharmacological potential and novel health benefits of longan seed, particularly concerning its antioxidant activity. This chapter describes the cultivation of longan, and reviews the antioxidant properties of its seed.
