The English walnut originates from Eastern Europe and the foothills of the Himalayas, and probably traveled from ancient Persia to Greece before being distributed by the Romans throughout Southern Europe. The early colonists from the UK brought seeds to North America, and the settlers called the resulting trees "English walnuts" to distinguish them from the Native American black walnut. Walnuts have been used as a food source since at least Neolithic times, 8000 years ago. They were also used in medieval Europe as a herbal medicine, particularly for brain and scalp ailments. In fact, different parts of the walnut tree, including bark, leaves, shells, fruits, and kernels, have been used in folk medicine for various diseases and conditions throughout the world (Lyle, 2006; Prasad, 2003).
