Applications To Health Promotion And Disease Prevention

Diabetes as a condition was known by its symptoms in the ancient world. The frequent urination characteristic of diabetes was mentioned in 3 AD in the Ebers Papyrus (Carpenter et al., 1998), along with various herbal treatments; Greek sources of a similar time period also mention both symptoms and treatments (Gemmill, 1972). Lupine is one of several traditional remedies used by Jordanian and Greek diabetes patients, reflecting the folk history of this plant product in diabetes therapy (Kubo et al., 2006; Otoom et al., 2006), while an Italian pharmacopeia of the early 20th century also includes lupine (Ferranini & Pirolli, 1937).
