Health risks or side effects following the proper administration of designated therapeutic dosages have not been recorded (LaGow, 2004). High consumption of u6-polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are found in most types of vegetable oils (including sunflower oil), might increase the likelihood that postmenopausal women may develop breast cancer (Sonestedt et al, 2008). A similar effect was observed on prostate cancer. Other analyses have suggested an inverse association between total polyunsaturated fatty acids and breast cancer risk.
Sunflower can cause allergic contact dermatitis in those who harvest or prepare plants for the production of SS and SO. The allergens are secreted by trichomes on leaf surfaces. Wind-blown trichomes from dry plants can cause airborne contact dermatitis. The major allergen is known as 1-0-methyl 1-4-5-dihydroniveusin A. The pollen may be described as a minor allergen (Martinez-Force etal., 1999).
Restrictions when taking preparations of HA should be maintained. Sunflower seeds, meal, and oil, taken as part of a well-balanced diet, do not cause any side effects (Kirtikar & Basu, 2006; Nadkarni, 2007).
