Psyllium is used to increase the subjective feeling of satiety before and between meals in an attempt to reduce total caloric intake. One study comparing Plantago ovata preparation (20 g granules with 200 mL water) to water or a placebo preparation found a significant difference in fullness 1 hour after consumption (Turnbull & Thomas 1995). Other studies have confirmed a suppressant effect on hunger and increased satiety that remains apparent up to 6 hours after consumption. Psyllium also significantly delays gastric emptying from the third hour after a meal (Bergmann et al 1992, Delargyetal 1997).
