Hundreds of randomised studies have been conducted in various populations to determine the clinical consequences of eating fish regularly or taking fish oil supplements. Some studies have focused on n-3 fatty acids intake as a whole and included vegetable sources together with marine-based sources. As with many reviews, inconsistent results are often seen. Sometimes this may be explained because the oils used as placebo are not necessarily inert, such as olive oil (Pizzorno & Murray 2006). It is important to note that few studies or reviews have considered the effect of variations in EP/VDHA, the ratio of n-3 FA:n-6 FA or the possible adverse effects relating to heavy metal contamination of fish sources.
