Carnitine is well tolerated at recommended doses. Mild gastrointestinal symptoms including abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, heartburn or gastritis may occur. Mild myasthenia has been reported in uraemic patients using the d,l form (Hendler & Rorvik 2001 ). Changes in body odour have also been noted (Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals 1999, Van-Oudheusden & Schölte 2002).
