Nasal Polyps Alternative Treatments
Patients with this syndrome, pansinusitis is common. Although nasal polyps may complicate ordinary allergic rhinitis (approximately 1-2 in some studies) and are a common manifestation of cystic fibrosis (up to 50 of such patients), the highest incidence of nasal polyps occurs in the patients with NSAID hypersensitivity (up to 90 ). Such polyps often respond to systemic steroid treatment but may recur within days of its cessation. The clinical diagnosis of NSAID hypersensitivity can be made from the above-noted manifestations, particularly in patients with rhinorrhea, eosinophilia, nasal polyps, pansinusitis, and asthma. It may be suspected in patients with urticaria angioedema and considered in patients experiencing anaphylaxis. Unfortunately, no easily administered test or laboratory procedure can make this diagnosis. Currently, in the United States, the only test reagents available for diagnosis are the COX-1 inhibitors. Ethnopharmacologically, the seeds have been reported to cure breast cancer, nasal polyps, uterine tumors, wound healing, rheumatism, sexual debility, and gastrointestinal and menstrual disorders. In African countries, LSS are chewed to cure throat diseases, asthma, and headaches (Al-Yahya etal., 1994 Wealth of India, 1998 Khare, 2007).
The clinical presentation of AFS can be similar to CRS. Patients often report chronic nasal congestion and nasal obstruction that has failed to respond to antibiotic therapy. Examination of the nasal cavity may reveal nasal polyps within the olfactory cleft, middle meatus, and sphenoethmoid recess. Occasionally, locally destructive changes from longstanding polyposis lead to proptosis and malar flattening (7). AFS is unilateral in more than 50 of patients but may involve several sinuses bilaterally, and bone erosion and extrasinus extension have been reported. The allergic mucin characteristic of this condition is thick and glue-like, with a heterogeneous brown appearance that has been compared to peanut butter.
Another complication of untreated IgE-mediated nasal disease is the development of nasal polyps. Because they are a characteristic finding in the syndrome of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) hypersensitivity, this topic will be dealt with in that section below.
The presence and activity of certain chronic conditions such as rhinitis, sinusitis, and nasal polyposis can affect the incidence of asthma exacerbations (32). The last condition, nasal polyps, may occur in a subgroup of patients that have or develop aspirin-induced asthma (AIA) via mechanisms involving the cyclooxygenase pathway (33). AIA may be present in as many
The taxonomic difficulties of this complex but useful genus. Hungry early man doubtless used traga-canth as a survival food, after seeing that ants, goats, and sheep relish the sweeter gums. Tragacanth gum is one of the oldest natural emulsifiers known to man, extensively used in vaginal jellies and creams, low-calorie syrups, toothpastes, and hand lotions. The gum is used in such foods as salad dressings, sauces, ice creams, confections, syrups, milk powder stabilizers, citrus oil emulsions, and cheeses. Together with guar, tragacanth may make the cheaper ice creams healthier, substituting soluble cholesterol-free polysaccharides for the unhealthy cream. Some of these polysaccharides are active against ascites tumor types in mice. Among the species taxonomically confused with or called tragacanth, or some derivative thereof, Hartwell notes folk-cancer remedies for chronic indurations of the liver (including, probably, cirrhosis), nasal polyps, non-ulcerated cancers, superfluous...
This can be quite easily conducted in out patient setting and addresses the patency of the nasal passage as well as the assessment of different segments of the pharynx. Anterior rhinoscopy using a simple nasal speculum allows visualisation of the anterior aspect of the nasal cavity and helps in identifying problems of caudal dislocation of the septum and if the nasal valve area is compromised. However, a rigid endoscope is more useful in a more comprehensive evaluation of the nasal passage and will identify problems such as deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps (fig. 1) and rhinosinusitis. The identification of these pathological features is important as they may be a cause of failed compliance and efficacy in the nCPAP patients.
This technique allows for the larger endotracheal tubes (ETTs), avoids nasal polyps, decreases the incidence of sinusitis (154), and may be performed more expediently. Larger ETTs are preferred as they add less resistance to the respiratory circuit and allow for more aggressive treatment of the asthmatic's mucous secretions (16).
The primary affinity of this remedy is with polyps, which may affect the nose, ears, vagina, and rectum. Nasal polyps may be accompanied by chronic catarrh, dried-up, foul-smelling crusts of catarrh, and loss of smell. Fibrous tumors on the eyelids and fibroids in the uterus may be helped by the remedy, as may lumps in the urethra caused by gonorrhea.
