Leaves, occasionally browsed by goats and other animals, have proven fatal to cattle (WOI).
Most of the data above apply to Buxus sempervirens. Atta-ur-Rahman et al. reported new steroidal alkaloids from Buxus longifolia: (+)-cyclovirobuxeine F, N-benzoyl-O-acetylbuxalongifoline, buxasamarine, (+)-cyclobuxamidine, and two known steroidal bases (16 alpha-acetoxybuxabenza-midienine and trans-cyclosuffrobuxinine) from the leaves of Buxus longifolia. The new alkaloids showed significant antibacterial activity (X9358638).
