After giving birth you'll no doubt want some well-earned rest, but resting in hospital is easier said than done. Between meals being served, nurses checking on you, cleaners tidying up and your baby needing your attention, you often have precious little time for rest. If you have your own room, ask not to be disturbed if you want to rest; if you're sharing a room, pull the curtains around your bed and hope that people get the message.

Ask the nurses to look after your baby in the nursery so that you can get at least one night's good sleep before you go home. When you're rested, you have more energy to handle the demands of baby care.
