An equivocal pregnancy test

Occasionally, the pregnancy test is indefinite, which means that the level of pregnancy hormone is lower than expected. This can be due to a number of factors:

1 The embryo implanted and started to produce pregnancy hormone but didn't have all that it takes to continue to grow and develop.

1 The embryo had a chromosomal abnormality that isn't compatible with life.

1 The embryo implanted in the wrong place. This is called an ectopic pregnancy and I explain this potentially life-threatening situation in more detail in Chapter 10.

1 The part of the embryo that makes the placenta is growing and producing pregnancy hormone but there is no foetus. This is called a blighted ovum and I explain this phenomenon in Chapter 10.

1 Pregnancy hormone may be present in your blood for a couple of weeks even if the pregnancy doesn't continue to grow.

1 Sometimes the pregnancy may be a bit 'slow' at getting going and embryologists talk about 'delayed implantation', which can explain lower-than-expected pregnancy hormone levels.

The fact that there is a measurable level of pregnancy hormone means that the embryo kept developing after it was transferred. However, you need to undergo more blood tests and perhaps an ultrasound examination before your doctor can tell you whether the pregnancy is continuing or not. This means that the endless wait for answers drags on and understandably you may find this limbo situation very difficult.

Pregnancy Diet Plan

The first trimester is very important for the mother and the baby. For most women it is common to find out about their pregnancy after they have missed their menstrual cycle. Since, not all women note their menstrual cycle and dates of intercourse, it may cause slight confusion about the exact date of conception. That is why most women find out that they are pregnant only after one month of pregnancy.
