A positive pregnancy test

If your test is positive, you, your partner and the nurse who gives you the result will be jumping for joy — you've cleared the final hurdle of the IVF obstacle course!

Some women already have an inkling that they're pregnant, but others find it hard to believe because they don't feel different in any way. And you may find that just as you breathe a sigh of relief that the worry of your treatment outcome is finally behind you, a new worry creeps in: Will the baby be okay? Such worries are quite normal and I explain how to handle them in Chapter 18.

The nurse arranges for you to have your first ultrasound examination about two weeks after your pregnancy test. If the early pregnancy is going well and a foetal heartbeat is seen at this examination, the IVF clinic refers you on to an antenatal clinic or a private obstetrician for pregnancy care (see Chapter 18).

Unfortunately, a few women get bad news when they have their ultrasound examination: I explain the risks of miscarriage and other types of pregnancy loss after IVF in Chapter 10.

The first trimester is very important for the mother and the baby. For most women it is common to find out about their pregnancy after they have missed their menstrual cycle. Since, not all women note their menstrual cycle and dates of intercourse, it may cause slight confusion about the exact date of conception. That is why most women find out that they are pregnant only after one month of pregnancy.
