While the minimum requirement for ascorbate is firmly established, there are considerable differences between the reference intakes published by different national and international authorities. Depending on the chosen criteria of adequacy, and assumptions made in interpreting experimental results, it is possible to produce arguments in support of reference intakes ranging from 30 to 100mg/day. Studies of intakes associated with reduced risks of cancer and cardiovascular disease suggest an average requirement of 90-100 mg/day and a reference intake of 120mg/day.
