Resting energy expenditure (REE) is directly linked to the size of the lean body mass. REE is difficult to determine accurately in volunteers since the method of indirect calorimetry has variations when the same individual is restudied. Several studies have demonstrated an elevated rate of energy expenditure when compared to controls of similar weight. The use of D2O18 has helped in the estimate of energy expenditure and will improve our understanding of energy expenditure in the future.
