Carcinogenicity in Animals

Rats fed a diet supplemented with maize contaminated with the F. moniliforme that had caused an outbreak of LEM in horses all developed hepatic nodules, cholantiofibrosis, or cholangiocarcinomas within 6 months. Lifetime studies in rats fed diets containing maize inoculated with F. moniliforme yielded a high incidence of liver tumors. The carci-nogenicity of FB1 has been directly assessed in a study in which a semipurified diet containing 50mg/kg of pure (>90%) FB1 was fed to rats. Ten out of 15 FB1-treated rats (66%) developed primary HCC.
