f 11 v paleontologist Michel Brunet and his Franco-Chadian Paleoanthropologies! Mission reported having unearthed a nearly seven-million-year-old hominid, called Sahelanthropus tchadensis, at a site known as Toros-Menalla in northern Chad. The site lies some 2,500 kilometers west of the East African fossil localities. "I think the most important thing we have done in terms of trying to understand our story is to open this new window," Brunet remarks. "We are proud to be the pioneers of the West."
