Causes of pregnancy loss

Pregnancy loss may occur because of a miscarriage, cervical incompetence, an ectopic pregnancy or a molar pregnancy.

A miscarriage is the loss of an embryo or fetus, usually because of genetic abnormalities in the developing cells. With cervical incompetence, the cervix begins to open before the pregnancy has come to term, which can result in a miscarriage.

In an ectopic pregnancy, the fertilized egg attaches itself to a place other than the uterus, usually a fallopian tube. A molar pregnancy is characterized by the development of an abnormal mass of cells in the uterus after fertilization.
