Breaking of water

At some point during labor, the bag of water (amniotic sac) housing your baby begins to leak or break, and the fluid that has cushioned your baby flows out of your vagina in a trickle or gush. Like other pregnant women, you may fear that your labor will start with your water breaking (membranes rupturing) while you're out in public.

In reality, few women experience a dramatic breaking of water, and if they do, it usually happens at home, often in bed. Most often, a woman's water breaks while she's in active labor and at the hospital or under the care of her health care provider. In fact, your health care provider may break your water for you during labor, if it hasn't broken on its own.
