The area should be bathed well with soap and water, removing all scabs and crusts, followed by application of antifungal cream on all lesions. Anti-fungal drugs (such as miconazole and clotrimazole) are often prescribed as a lotion, cream, or ointment to ease the itchy rash.

To prevent recurrence, treatment should be continued for some time after the symptoms have passed to make sure the fungi have been eliminated. Mild infections on the skin surface may require treatment for up to six weeks.

In very severe cases or if there is no improvement with the cream after a few days, some people require oral medication; griseofulvin is used only for these severe, resistant cases. Scratching the rash can lead to additional skin infection.
