epilepsy A chronic condition of the nervous system marked primarily by recurrent seizures. Epilepsy may express itself in major (grand mal) seizures causing unconsciousness, or in minor (petit mal) seizures. It is sometimes associated with other conditions including specific learning disabilities or attention disorders.

About 1 percent of all children will develop epilepsy, which means that about 690,000 children and young adults in the United States have some type of epilepsy. About 5 5,000 new cases of epilepsy are diagnosed each year in children under age 18.
