Because there are several theories about what causes bed-wetting, there are a variety of treatments based on the premise of each of these theo ries. There is not one proven theory or treatment that is successful all the time. Often a combination of treatments are needed to control the problem. On the other hand, bed-wetting will eventually stop on its own without specific treatment. Bed-wetting is not harmful to a child in any way other than its impact on self-esteem. A child who is embarrassed to attend camp or a sleepover may benefit from treatment that includes restricting fluids after 6 p.m., conditioning therapy using a bed-wetting alarm, drug therapy to replace vaso-pressin, or psychotherapy.
