National Hydrocephalus Foundation

Over the past 25 years NHSA's mission has changed from simply defending Head Start in Congress to actively expanding and improving the program. From planning massive annual training conferences to publishing a vast array of publications, the National Head Start Association continually strives to improve the quality of Head Start's comprehensive services for America's children and families.

National Hydrocephalus Foundation A nonprofit organization founded in 1980 to familiarize the public with hydrocephalus, a buildup of cere-brospinal fluid inside the skull. The foundation also seeks to remove stigma from those with hydro-cephalus, collect and disseminate information, counsel parents on specific problems encountered as a result of hydrocephalus in their children, work to obtain government funding for research, secure health insurance covering this disease, and form local chapters to help accomplish these goals. The foundation is supported by donations and membership fees and responds in particular to the disorder as a condition in itself, as opposed to hydrocephalus as a secondary condition of another disease. National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities A national information center that provides information on disabilities and disability-related issues. Services are offered to families, educators, administrators, journalists, and students, with a special emphasis on children and youth. The center can provide information about specific disabilities, special education, individualized education programs, parent materials, disability organizations, professional associations, education rights, early intervention services for infants and toddlers, and transition to adult life. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) The federal research institute that provides the major support for scientists conducting research into better ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent the many infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. The National Institute of

Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) has four divisions: AIDS; Allergy; Immunology and Transplantation; and Extramural Activities. (For contact information, see Appendix I.)

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Federal institute that is part of the National Institutes of Health, the biomedical research arm of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) is to ensure that every person is born healthy and wanted, that women suffer no harmful effects from the reproductive process, and that all children have the chance to fulfill their potential for a healthy and productive life, free of disease or disability.

NICHD was created by Congress in 1962 and supports and conducts research on topics related to the health of children, adults, families, and populations, including:

• reducing infant deaths

• improving the health of women and men

• understanding reproductive health

• learning about growth and development

• examining birth defects and mental retardation

• enhancing involvement across the life span through medical rehabilitation research.

National Marfan Foundation A nonprofit organization founded in 1981 by people affected by mar-fan syndrome and their families. Its purpose is to provide accurate information about the condition to patients, family members, and health-care providers, provide support to members and patients, and support research. The National Mar-fan Foundation provides programs of information, awareness, education, service, and research through a variety of projects. It offers pamphlets, booklets, and other materials that explain Marfan syndrome, a medical brochure series targeted to health-care professionals, a quarterly newsletter, and an annual report.
