The Issue of Boundaries

As a female therapist in an all-female group there is much emphasis on the special importance of boundaries (Oakley, 1996). This is due to the fact that so many women have experienced inner and outer boundary violations. Trying to prevent boundary violations does not imply that they will never occur but certain precautions may be implemented to attenuate their occurrence. In order for group members to work on personal issues and feel safe within a group, these members need to know that there are boundaries in the group and this structure often helps to reduce anxiety (Nitsun, 1996).
