Virtually every authority will agree on the importance of careful screening and thoughtful selection of the members of a psychotherapy group (Rutan & Stone, 2000; Fehr, 2003). Yalom (1994) further suggests that the fate of a group can be sealed before the group begins due to the inclusion or exclusion of its members. Many years ago, when initiating my six groups, 1 found this relatively easy, since 1 drew the group members from my individual practice. I had worked with every participant for a considerable period of time, knew them quite well, and felt very comfortable placing each one in an appropriate group.
