Volleyball has become the world's most popular participation sport. Epidemiologic data suggest that jumping and forceful contact of the volleyball with the upper extremity in an overhead position (spiking and serving) carry the greatest risk for injury. It has been estimated that an elite volleyball athlete, practicing and competing 16 to 20 hours per week, performs approximately 40,000 spikes a year. This places enormous demands on the musculotendi-nous structure of the shoulders, knees, ankles, and low back. These structures are at significant risk for injuries in athletes.62,63

Blocking by players on the opposing team has been associated with the highest rate of injuries, especially ankle sprains.62,63

The injured athlete may experience pain, swelling, stiffness, erythema, or inability to perform at the usual level. A dysfunction in one structure places other tissues and structures under increased stress.

Dry needling acupuncture therapy is very effective in treating most common volleyball injuries.
