For example, in the case of esophageal stimulus, a sustained, relatively high intensity of sensation is perceived even after termination of the distending esoph-ageal stimulus. Accordingly, hypersensitivity to natural visceral stimuli may be associated with discomfort and pain even in the absence of obvious visceral disease.2 Tissue inflammation may be initiated after tissue injury.
