Trochanteric Bursitis

The trochanteric bursa lies between the gluteus maximus and the posterolateral aspect of the greater trochanter. Several muscles cross this bursa and may rub across the trochanter when the muscles are tight and fatigued as a result of direct physical impact on the bone or repetitive stress, such as that which may affect the iliotibial band in running.

The symptoms include tenderness and swelling of the hip or thigh and pain in flexing or extending the hip.

Dry needling acupuncture is an effective treatment for this injury. Needles can be applied directly into the inflamed bursa and into related muscles on the hip, thigh, and lower leg. In addition, the treatment is used to balance the entire musculoskeletal system. Two treatment sessions per week should be provided.
