Specificity refers to the size and precise location of a passive acu-reflex point. In the beginning of the passive phase, the area or surface size of a sensitive acu-reflex point is relatively small and difficult to locate, which is an indication of the early stage of transition from latent to passive phase. This condition is referred to as high specificity. When symptoms become more severe, the sensitivity of the acu-reflex point spreads to surrounding tissues; as a consequence, the surface size of the passive acu-reflex point grows, and the point becomes more easily palpable. This condition is referred to as low specificity. Some practitioners have found that careful palpation reveals large sensitive regions, from 16 to 200 cm2 (about 1.5 to 5 inches in diameter) surrounding a sensitive point.4

It is more difficult to locate a smaller, less sensitive, or more specific acu-reflex point than a bigger, more sensitive, and less specific one. Therefore the smaller acu-reflex point is defined as being more specific. An acu-reflex point is more specific when it is limited to a small area and as less specific when it is larger and covers a broader area. Specificity is inversely proportional to sensitivity: Specificity decreases when sensitivity increases, and vice versa.
