Medial shin splints from the impact forces during repeated jumping and running are common in basketball. Excessive pronation can cause posterior tibialis tendinitis at the musculotendinous junction of the medial tibia. The posterior tibialis muscle concentrically supinates the foot and eccentrically controls pronation. Posterior tibialis tendinitis is usually associated with eccentric weakness of the posterior tibialis and weakness of the intrinsic foot muscles, the flexor digitorum longus, and the flexor hallucis longus.11

Shin splints can be effectively prevented if regular de-stressing treatment is applied to the three compartments of the leg. Dry needling acupuncture therapy is very effective in treating this condition, especially in the early stages. Once the symptoms appear, the treatment should include the three leg compartments, the thigh compartments, and the core system.
