Metacarpal Fracture

A direct blow to the hand, falling on the hand, or forceful strike with closed fist on a hard object can cause metacarpal fracture; these events happen in football, basketball, and other contact sports. A fracture of the neck of the fifth metacarpal is the most common type. Pain, swelling, and bruising occur locally, and bone deformity may be observed.

Immediate medical attention is warranted, and surgery is needed in some cases. Dry needling acupuncture can be used immediately after the emergency treatment. Needles can be applied to the tissue at the site of pain, swelling, and bruising. Needling may be needed in wrist tendons, wrist muscles, and associated tissue, along with the injured area.
