Lower Extremity Injuries

The majority of lower extremity injuries are to the ligaments or menisci of the knee and ankle. Ankle sprain results from a severe dorsiflexion, eversion, and external rotation of the ankle. Knee injuries include damage to the collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments.

The condition of myositis ossificans traumatica is described as a sequela of severe contusion, hematoma, or fracture.41

In conjunction with other modalities, dry needling acupuncture is very helpful for healing all these injuries, especially in reducing swelling, pain, hematoma, and contusion. Daily treatment should be provided for swelling, hematoma, and contusion.

SWIMMING

Swimming has become one of the most popular sports. Injuries are common in competitive swimming and can limit the level of achievement and the length of a swimmer's career. According to one study, muscle activity increases with the onset of fatigue as the athlete tries to maintain speed in the water.42 Muscle efficiency decreases as the rate of neural firing increases and the output of force decreases.43
