The term fascia is rather loosely applied in anatomy. Most fasciae are connective tissue layers and are arranged in sheets or tubes between or around anatomic structures. Superficial fascia is a padding that is connected with the dermis and located above the deep fascia. Deep fascia lies under the superficial fascia and often forms the outer connective layer or covering of the structures underneath, such as blood vessels, nerves, or muscles. Acupuncture points are formed at locations where a nerve trunk passes through deep fascia and emerges close to the surface (Fig. 7-5).
