Acute Knee Injuries

Acute knee injuries are rare but can require significant time for recovery before the athlete is able to return to play. Acute knee injury occurs most often when a player lands on another player's foot after jumping in the attack zone. Injury can involve the anterior cruciate ligament and menisci.64 Other factors that may predispose the athlete to knee injury include overuse stresses of the musculoskel-etal system, which can cause ligamentous laxity in women, and valgus angle at the knee.

Dry needling acupuncture is very helpful in reducing pain, swelling, and inflammation at all phases of treatment of acute knee injuries, including those for which surgery is required. The location of the tender areas should be carefully identified and treated twice a week. Swelling and contusions should be treated every day. Dry needling acupuncture can be applied immediately after the surgery.
