Summary of Latelife Depression Assessment

Assessing the causes of depression and its severity in older patients should be done with a holistic mind-set. Older adults come to treatment with long histories and a wealth of experiences that have shaped who they are. These histories provide points of reference for how older patients' functioning is now compared to the recent and far past. In addition, older patients may have several interlinking causes for being depressed, all of which should, and can, be addressed in CT. Therapists should keep in mind medical, neurological, educational, and social factors in making an assessment. Thorough assessments not only help the cognitive therapist understand the causes of depression and the patient's goals for change but also assist in determining the potential problems that could influence the therapeutic process when treatment begins. We discover what these problems are and how they may be addressed in the following section.
