Session 10 Family Communication

This module, which involves both the teenager and the caregivers, is used when the therapist becomes aware of negative communication in the family, or when there are high levels of "expressed emotion." We began with a discussion of common patterns of communication that can contribute to con flict at home. When asked if these occurred in his family, Jason noted that his parents often lectured and nagged, and that he ignored them or simply walked out of the room. His parents concurred. Together, we discussed the importance of understanding each other's thoughts and feelings. During the session Jason was able to identify specific emotions he felt when his parents discussed his grades, and he practiced expressing his thoughts and feelings to his parents in a direct, and honest manner.
