Mary was held up at gunpoint 3 years earlier, while working as a bank teller. During the event, she responded with intense fear and helplessness, because she felt physically threatened. The robbery was interrupted by police, who later determined that the weapon was in fact a toy gun. In the months following the incident, Mary described symptoms of reexperiencing the event, avoidance, and arousal that continued to worsen. One year later, she went to the emergency department complaining of an exacerbation of depression precipitated by the criminal proceedings against the assailant. Mary was discharged with unremitted depressive and posttraumatic stress symptoms that have persisted for the past 3 years.
