The two principal cognitive-behavioral treatment approaches to BPD—CT and DBT—both propose that environmental contexts, biological factors, behavioral skills deficits, dysfunctional cognitive content and styles, and emotional responses all transact with each other and need to be addressed in therapy. However, as one would expect, CT more strongly emphasizes and focuses on cognitions such as dysfunctional attitudes, beliefs, and information-processing styles, whereas DBT more strongly emphasizes biological dysfunction of the emotion regulation system, behavioral skills deficits, and reinforcement contingencies and other environmental influences. We discuss next the relations of some of these factors to BPD.
