A range of factors appeared to be implicated in Jason's distress. As became apparent during later sessions, Jason was intimidated by his brothers' academic success and his parents' achievements. Discrepancies were apparent between Jason's performance and the expectations held by Jason and his family. It quickly became apparent that Jason tended to withdraw, both cognitively and behaviorally, from any thought, event, or situation that elicited a negative mood. He simply shifted his attention away from such stimuli. He approached problems and challenges in a passive, avoidant manner. Although he presented as diffident and disengaged, he was acutely aware of his difficulties and felt powerless to rectify them. He had a number of strengths. He was bright, creative, and empathic, and despite recent isolation, his social skills were good.
