Seven core phenomena of analogical thinking proposed by Hummel and Holyoak (1997)

• Isomorphism. People use relational structure to find one-to-one (or isomorphic) mappings between corresponding objects in two domains when such objects are dissimilar or non-corresponding objects are (misleadingly) similar (Ross, 1977, 1989).

• Semantic similarity. In general, similarity between domains eases mapping (Gentner & Toupin, 1986; Keane et al., 1994).
