Timed urine collections are sometimes needed at various times during your child's treatment. Such collections are useful in evaluating your childs kidney function prior to receiving chemotherapy drugs that can cause damage to the kidneys or to measure certain substances in the urine. If your child is toilet trained, the collection is done by saving all the urine your child produces in a defined period of hours. If your child is not yet toilet trained, a Foley catheter (catheter that goes up the urethra into the bladder) will need to be placed for a period of time.
